Expansion at Oregon Timber Frame Limited Underway with Barratt Developments PLC Investment

Selkirk-based Oregon Timber Frame Limited (Oregon) is set to undergo a significant expansion with the first phase now underway, thanks to a £24 million investment by Barratt Developments PLC. This expansion comes as part of Barratt’s plans to increase its workforce and invest in plant development following the acquisition of Oregon.

The first phase of the expansion includes the construction of a new 900m2 office block that will accommodate up to 60 permanent staff members, double the capacity of the current temporary block. Plans for a new training room, meeting rooms, and improved kitchen and welfare facilities have also been revealed for the two-floor office.

This expansion is expected to create over 70 new jobs in the Borders community, with phase two of the project involving the extension of the plant’s existing manufacturing capacity. Barratt aims to increase its use of modern methods of construction off-site, reduce its carbon footprint, and address the skills challenge facing the industry through timber frame technology.

Regional Managing Director for Barratt Developments Scotland, Douglas McLeod, expressed excitement about the milestone, stating, “Starting construction on phase one of this expansion is a fantastic milestone for us. Since acquiring Oregon five years ago, we’ve worked hard to bring our plans to fruition, so commencing work on the new office is one step closer to achieving our goals.”

Barratt’s long-term goal includes building at least 30% of its homes using modern methods of construction by 2030. Using timber frames from Oregon factories has allowed Barratt to reduce build times and carbon emissions, aligning with their commitment to becoming carbon neutral in their operations by 2030.

Additional investment from Barratt includes a new timber frame factory in the East Midlands, creating 170 new jobs locally. Oregon, known for its high-quality timber frame structures, now exclusively manufactures kits for Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes brands across the UK.

Overall, the Oregon expansion and Barratt’s investment showcase a commitment to modern construction methods, sustainability, and job creation in the Borders region. The completion of phase one will pave the way for phase two, further advancing Barratt’s goals for growth and innovation in the construction industry.
