Building Life Sciences Ecosystems: A Conversation with TusPark’s Wei Meng and Raymond Fang

TusPark, a global investor, developer, and operator in science- and technology-related real estate, has been making waves in the UK with its innovative approach to building life sciences ecosystems. Recently, Goodwin Partner Raymond Fang sat down with Wei Meng, head of UK innovation and real estate at TusPark, to discuss the company’s journey in the UK and the operational nature of real estate in the life sciences sector.

TusPark, known for its investments in science cities, science parks, and incubators worldwide, entered the UK market in 2017 through a partnership with Trinity College (University of Cambridge) to rejuvenate the Cambridge Science Park. With a £200 million investment, TusPark transformed the science park into a hub for life sciences, attracting startups and established companies alike. Wei Meng, a PhD in chemistry from the University of Cambridge, leads TusPark’s real estate business unit in the UK and plays a key role in supporting the growth of innovative businesses in the sector.

When asked about the role of life sciences as an “operational real estate” asset class, Wei Meng highlighted the importance of astute management in both the development and operational phases. To support the evolving needs of tenants over time, TusPark provides quality space tailored to different funding stages, as well as access to amenities and services that foster innovation and growth.

While the “Golden Triangle” of London, Cambridge, and Oxford has traditionally been a hotspot for innovation in the UK, Wei Meng sees opportunities for growth outside of this region. TusPark has invested in the north of England, including in Newcastle, where they have established an incubator in partnership with Barclays Eagle Labs.

To create a successful and vibrant life sciences ecosystem, Wei Meng emphasized the importance of stability, talent, capital, and integration. TusPark supports innovation in the UK through its three pillars of space, venture capital, and business support, connecting early-stage businesses with funding and expansion opportunities through their global network.

As TusPark continues to drive innovation and growth in the UK’s life sciences sector, their partnership with Trinity College and their commitment to supporting startups and established companies alike position them as a key player in building thriving ecosystems for innovation and research.
