Property Owners in New Brunswick File Record Number of Appeals on 2024 Tax Assessments
The topic of property tax assessments in New Brunswick is causing quite a stir this year, with a record number of property owners filing appeals on their 2024 assessments. Luke Barton, a resident whose assessment skyrocketed from $255,200 in 2021 to $795,600 this year, is just one of many homeowners feeling the impact of these increases. Despite efforts by the city of Saint John to reduce tax rates, complaints from property owners are on the rise.
Mayor Donna Reardon and Liberal leader Susan Holt are both calling for a review and reform of the property tax system, citing the lack of clarity and fairness in the current structure. Out of the nearly 10,000 appeals filed, over 8,500 will undergo a formal review this year. The province attributes the increase in appeals to a strong real estate market and greater awareness among property owners.
It is important to note that while property owners have the right to appeal their assessments, they are still required to pay the full amount of their property tax by the deadline. This ongoing issue highlights the need for a more transparent and equitable property tax system in New Brunswick.
