Barclays Names Ex-HSBC Executive as Head of Social Housing: Mike Figg Takes the Lead

Barclays has announced the appointment of Mike Figg, a former HSBC executive, as the new head of social housing. Figg will be taking on this role at Barclays UK Corporate Bank starting from July 1st, where he will be overseeing the social housing team’s financing solutions.

In addition to managing the financing solutions, Figg will also be responsible for sector engagement and building relationships with key stakeholders and policymakers, which includes over 160 housing association clients. The current head of social housing, Dave Cassidy, will be transitioning to another role within the bank.

Having previously worked at HSBC as the deputy head of housing, corporate real estate, Figg brings with him five years of experience in leadership roles in the real estate finance team. Expressing his excitement about joining Barclays, Figg stated, “I’ve long admired the work Barclays does in the social housing space and am truly excited to join their world-class team.”

Barclays has been actively involved in sustainability-linked deals with housing associations. For instance, in January, the bank agreed to a £52m deal with Bromford, a Tewkesbury-based landlord, with the loan tied to Bromford’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions and achieving a customer advocacy score by 2028.

Furthermore, Barclays also recently sealed a £115m sustainability-linked loan with Orbit, a housing association with 46,500 homes, to support new home building and improve the energy efficiency of its existing housing stock.

The appointment of Mike Figg and Barclays’ involvement in sustainability-linked deals demonstrate the bank’s commitment to the social housing sector and promoting sustainable practices. Stay updated on more housing news by signing up for Barclays’ monthly Housing Moves newsletter.
